Hannah Rudman is the CEO of Envirodigital, a lighthouse brand which guides business in a sustainable direction by creating digital technology developments to help enterprises be more environmentally, ecologically, & socially sustainable. Hannah shared some tips for making your microbusiness more sustainable.
On Memory – Hannah opened with some scary statistics on the state of the environment. You'll have heard much if it before: being green is hard. She wanted us to feel bad and guilty about us so that we remember that feeling. As Maya Angelou said, "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."
On Empowerment – Envirodigital is working on technologies that help people change their behaviour and make better, more sustainable choices. We often feel disempowered, that what we do doesn't make much difference. Envirodigital wants to change that.
Hannah's Tips – Envirodigital technology isn't ready yet, but there are technologies which are:
Hive and Watson and Holmes allow you to measure your personal emissions – allowing you to do small, green things. It gives you a sense of agency.
Reduce your business travel. Maybe attend a conference online once in awhile. You'll reduces emissions as well as costs. Consider using Claim Expenses, which tracks expenses and your CO2.
While working online, engage in environmental issues using clicktivism. Some are skeptical, but you can enact change digitally.
Be a NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard). Shout about what you're doing. Sharing your green activity on social media normalises those behaviours. Whatever we do, we need to use more ways of encouraging the personal engagement of our audience, clients, and customers.
Hannah's closing remarks: "We can do the small green thing. To influence the big with our integrity, we can make changes to our business through core work or partnering.
"As Andy Warhol reminded us – they always say time changes things, but actually you have to change them yourself."
